Title: | Genealogy of the Prosser family in Ewyas Lacy and vicinity |
Date: | 1780 - 1918 |
Introduction
The surname Prosser has been well represented in Ewyas Lacy parishes since at least the 17th century. We are indebted to Peter and Rachel Prosser for this guest contribution outlining their family genealogy from Thomas Prosser (c1751 – c1820) of the Birches in Craswall through successive generations to 1918. Among parish, census and other public records, many of the details found online in the History of Ewyas Lacy show how use of this website has helped to draw a vivid picture of the family’s circumstances and movements in the local area.

Prosser at the Birches in Ewyas Lacy
Revised 18th March 2020 following examination of title deeds for the Birches, the gravestone in St Mary’s church Cusop, and records from Pen-y-Fal hospital for Mary Ann Prosser (Stevens).
Introduction
Joseph Evan Prosser (Baptised Joseph Thomas Evan Prosser) was born in Llanarth Monmouthshire in 1891 and lived for much of his life in Kingstone Herefordshire until his death in 1971.
His wife Mary Ann Tranter lived for a few years at Lodge Farm, Walterstone. She finished her schooling at Walterstone.
Joseph’s parents Edwin Prosser and Mary Ann Stephens were born and lived in Ewyas Lacy. They moved to Bryn Gwyn near Llanarth sometime between 1883 and 1885.
Joseph’s known siblings were Rose, Adeline, and Walter. It is known that Rose married George Jones and emigrated to America. Adeline married Thomas Nurden and lived in Cwm (Ebbw Vale). Walter lived in Raglan.
This information allowed us to trace back to 1881 using census information.
There are no family records. The family split up after the death of Edwin’s mother in 1856 and again after the death of his brother William in 1865.
Edwin’s connection to the Birches was important in identifying the family in the 1841 census and became the focal point for our research into our line of the Prosser family in Ewyas Lacey.
This is very much a work in progress. We have tried to ensure that our conclusions are based on reasonable evidence, but our conclusions may not always be correct.
We are grateful to the Ewyas Lacy Study Group (ELSG) whose web site (http://ewyaslacy.org.uk/) provided a great deal of the evidence.
Note: There is a variety of spellings for some names. Prichard has been spelled Pritchard, Sybill as Syble, Sible, Seblil, Sibil, and Sybil. Prosser is more often written as Profser, but the census transcriptions have Porpeer (1841), Proper, Brosser, Perper, and Prasser.
The Birches
Land tax documents suggest the family occupied the Birches in Cusop and Crasswell from at least 1780. The link is tenuous and is based on the layout of the tax return, the amount of the tax, and the names of the Landlord and Occupier. The tax return is only conclusive from 1826 when the property is named.
The land tax suggests occupancy on returns:
Walter Prosser 1780 - 1791
Thomas Prosser 1799 - 1816
Sybil Prosser 1821 – 1836
The Birches was only named in the tax return from 1826 when Sybil was the tenant.

Title: Digital Archive [INDEX]: Craswall Land Tax Records
Place name: Craswall
Date: 1780 to 1836
Description:
Land Tax Records usually show the landlord or proprietor and the tenant or occupier. 1780 and 1781 only show the landowners whilst 1831 and 1836 give property names as well.
Sybil is described on her death certificate as the widow of Thomas Prosser. Their relationship and link to the Birches is confirmed on their gravestone.
From 1780 the return shows that the Landlord was Sir George Cornewall but there is evidence of the sale of the Birches from Thomas Prosser to Sir George Cornewall in 1808.
The tenancy appears to have changed between 1836 and 1840 because when the farm was sold in 1840 by the Cornewall estate Thomas Prosser (son) was shown as the tenant.

Mortgage and Sale
The documents relating to the sale of the Birches give evidence of occupation of the Birches and Maes Lawens from at least 1792 to 1808.
In 1792 Walter Prosser of the Birches borrowed £100 from Sir George Cornewall of Moccas Court. To secure the loan he transferred the property rights of the Birches by indenture of ffeoffment to Sir George Cornewall. As additional security his only son Thomas Prosser demised his property known as Maes Lawens for a period of 500 years.

(In pencil) Maes Lawens sold to Penry Williams in 1837 |
In 1808 the Birches and Maes Lawens were sold to Sir George Cornewall by means of a Lease and Release.
The Birches was in the possession of Thomas Prosser and Maes Lawens was in possession of William Pritchard. Possibly Thomas’s brother-in-law. The lease for both properties was for a nominal amount and period of 1 year.
The Release was made between Thomas Prosser the only son and heir at law of the late Walter Prosser and Sir George Cornewall.
Walter Prosser died intestate with the loan unpaid. The capital and interest (£155) became due and both properties forfeit under the ffeoffment and demise.
Thomas Prosser agreed to sell both properties for £225 above the amount due.

Marital status for Edwin has been amended from Widow to Married. This suggests that Mary has died but we know now that she had been admitted to a mental institution. The stigma attached to that probably accounts for the initial entry of Widow. Information on live births and surviving children had been completed. There were 9 live births and now only 5 children were still alive.
The known survivors were:
Edwin
Rosa
Adeline
Joseph
Walter
