Ewyas Lacy Study Group:
Index of Private Research Portfolios
Much of our understanding of the past is based on records that have been preserved in libraries and official archives of various types. This is all very well, but has the drawback that more often than not the records retained by the officials concerned have for obvious reasons tended to deal with the activities of the wealthy and the powerful. They therefore arguably give a somewhat distorted view of history and often cast little light on the lives of the vast majority of ordinary people.
We are however fortunate to have been offered access to a number of private portfolios of documents and other materials during our researches into Ewyas Lacy, which otherwise are not open to the public. These are frequently associated with individual research projects and can provide a more intimate picture of local history, with a diverse assortment of records ranging across generations of the same family and/or the descent of a particular property. We are particularly grateful to the owners of these portfolios who have allowed us access and agreed to their material being made available on the Ewyas Lacy Study Group website.
We have summarised the content of the materials in each portfolio and these summaries can be viewed by following the links in the index of individual collections given below. In some [but not all] cases we have been given permission to photograph the material, and pictures of the original records in those cases can be viewed by following links on the individual collections pages.
