Title: | Digital Archive - Letter from the Order of Oddfellows regarding Sick Pay |
Place name: | Michaelchurch Escley |
Date: | 1896 |
Description:
The Oddfellows was a Friendly Society intended to provide help to members when they needed it at a time when there was no welfare state or National Health Service. The local Lodge was part of a national non-profit mutual organisation owned by their members where all income was passed back to the members in the form of services and benefits. This letter relating to sick pay on November 6th 1896 to John Powell - addressed as ‘Dear Sir and Brother’ - is an example of how the system worked.
