Description:
A transcription and interpretation of the original Land Tax records for Michaelchurch Escley has been carried out by Tony Gray on behalf of the ELSG. The original documents are sometimes in poor condition and he has used where possible his extensive local knowledge of properties and landowners/ occupiers to interpret passages and entries that might otherwise be illegible; these may be regarded as ‘educated guesses’ based on other unrelated sources and/or other years’ land tax entries.
Property names often do not appear in the original documents but Land Tax entries have also been correlated to a ‘property summary’ of the parish derived from this and other sources. Both the spellings and sometimes the names of properties vary considerably over time and between different sources. Blanks in the tables reflect frequent instances where information is missing from the original returns or is illegible.
