Description:
Photograph of the bin floor at Clodock Mill, showing the sack hoist mechanism in close-up. A leather belt from the lay shaft on the floor below drives the hoist pulley wheel. The control ropes seen to the lower left of the picture lead to the lower two floors of the mill, and allow the miller to operate the hoist from any part of the mill. The sack hoist uses a ‘slack belt’ drive system, where the hoist pulley is mounted on a moveable lever, and pulling the control ropes raises the lever, tightens the belt, and so engages the drive. Releasing the control rope causes the hoist pulley to fall under its own weight, disengaging the drive belt.
