Requests to be buried in the parish
church of Clodock .
Beneficiaries:
Nephew, Zachary Gilbert, in consideration for having the testator's estate called The Blackhill is, on the death of the testator and the testator's brother William Gilbert, to pay £40 which is to pay legacies :
To the 3 children of nephew Lewis Gilbert, £8 to be divided equally between them. Also 40/- to Lewis himself.
To Katharine, daughter of the testator's brother William, £5 and to her sisters Alice and Maud £10 between them equally.
To nephew, William Gilbert youngest son of brother, William, £5.
To goddaughter Anne Watkins, daughter of Phillipp Watkins, £4.
To Lewis and Constance Jenkins,£5
To nephew, John Gilbert, the unexpired term of the lease on the tenement and several parcels of land called Kaer Onn, Kay Werne, Kay Hendre, Er Enys y Kandire here, Free Keven y Kay Mayne and Kay Odden all situated in Llanveynoe and currently in the tenure of William Watkins but held by the testator. In consideration of which John, and his heirs, is to pay, for the remainder of the term of the lease, £6 annually to the overseers of the poor, the churchwardens and constables of Longtown and Llanveynoe. That is £3 on the feast of John the Baptist and £3 at Christmas; the money to be used for 'placing and setting of two children of the poorest sortes apprentices….' from the two townships.
To niece, Elizabeth Beavan, the 3 closes of leasehold land in Clodock which the testator's late brother Zachary Gilbert purchased from John Price gent and which are in the tenure of William Beavan, her father, to hold until her brother John pays her £20 when she shall pass the lease on to him.
To nephew Thomas Beavan, the messuage and lands in Longtown, late the lands of Phillip John Watkin. If Phillip John Watkin repays his mortgage and repairs then Thomas to keep the money.
To Nephew John Gilbert, all the parcels of land in Longtown lately purchased from Margaret Parry, spinster. In consideration of which John is to pay Harry Watkin, Thomas Watkin. Joan Watkin, Margaret Watkin and Blanch Watkin, £12. and to godson Walter Vaughan, son of William Vaughan of Dore, £10.
To nephew Henry Gilbert, £50
To Thomas Beavan, £20
To John Gilbert, £30.
These last three bequests to be paid out of the £100 that the testator has in the hand of Michel Thomas, gent on his lands and premises. If Michel Thomas defaults then the lands are to go to John Gilbert and he pays the legacies.
To nephew, Lewis Gilbert, [?]£20 [the copyist has missed at least one line here and the meaning becomes unclear] also to Lewis Gilbert the premises in Craswall for his lifetime and then to his eldest son Gilbert.

To wife, Elizabeth one third part of all corn, threshed and unthreshed also one half of oxen, cows, young cattle, horses and sheep for her lifetime in addition to half of the household stuff. On her death her legacy goes to John Gilbert, Thomas Beavan, Harry Gilbert and Elizabeth Beavan equally between them. The other half they are to have immediately on the testator's death.
Everything else not bequeathed is to go to brother William Gilbert and nephew John Gilbert and to be used to pay legacies, rents and funeral expenses

Before finally sealing his will the testator states that William Vaughan of Dore and John Watkin Williams 'shall part and divide the said cattle and household between my wife, my executors and others.

Executors: Brother William Gilbert and nephew, John Gilbert.

Witnesses: William Vaughan, Lewis Jenkins, Henry Powell, Phillipp Vaughan and John Watkin Williams.

Date of Probate: 8 November 1658.

As this is taken from a copy of the will deposited at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury there are no supporting documents.
