These properties were part of the Manor of Upper Craswall at one time the estate of Craswall Priory.
At the dissolution of alien priories the Manor was granted to ‘God’s House’ which later became Christ’s College, Cambridge (Court Roll of 1505). It was subsequently acquired by the Earl of Oxford and by 1705 was in the hands of the Smyth Family of Tenbury and Stoke House, Salop, from who it descended to Philip Williams of Penpont a nephew of the Smyths.
At the time of the Tithe map 1840 most of Upper Craswall was owned by Penry (Penry the third) Williams (click here for map details )
The 1840 Tithe map of Craswall is titled ‘Upper and Lower Craswell’ and a boundary between the Upper and Lower parts is partially indicated. The tithes for each section are separately detailed. The boundary, in part, runs across several old fields splitting them into two sections for Tithe apportionment purposes (see map 4) thus confirming that the division to be one of ancient origin. Upper Craswall is known as the ‘Manor of Craswall’ and has its origin in the lands granted in to Craswall Priory. Details of a dispute of 1695 between the then owner of the Manor of Craswall, Mr Smyth of Stoke House, Tenbury and Lord Abergavenny who held the adjoining Manor of Ewyas Lacy are given elsewhere on this site (gc_cra_3001). This document also records the meres or boundary between the two lordships.
