CUSOP, anciently " St. Cewydd's Hope," is a parish and village on the Hereford and Hay road, on the borders of Brecknockshire, 20 miles west from Hereford and 1 south-east from Hay, in the Leominster division of the county, in Ewyas Lacy hundred, Hay county court district, Dore and Bredwardine rural district, Bredwardine petty sessional division, rural deanery of Abbey Dore and archdeaconry and diocese of Hereford. Hay station, on the Hereford, Hay and Brecon line of the Great Western railway, is in this parish, 164 miles from London. The church of St. Mary, built by the monks of Llanthony, is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing 2 bells: the church was restored in 1857: new choir stalls, the gift of Mrs. Rouse, were added in 1913, to the memory of Rev. J. Thomas, a former curate in charge. In the churchyard are four very fine yew trees, which are mentioned in Domesday book. The register of marriages dates from the year 1754; baptisms and burials, 1709. The living is a rectory, net yearly value about £300, with glebe and residence, in the gift of the Church Pastoral Aid Society Trust, and held since 1935 by the Rev. John Waddington Hubbard M.A. of Queen’s College, Cambridge and BSc of London University. The foundations of Cusop Castle, one of a chain of fortresses anciently defending the Welsh borders, still remain. There are some barrows in the township. Richard James Eckley esq. J.P. is the chief landowner. The soil is sandy; subsoil, chiefly sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and swedes. The area is 2,287 acres of land and 7 of water; the population in 1931 was 396.
