Title: | Digital Archive: Newspaper cutting – Report of an extraordinary meeting of the shareholders of the Golden Valley Railway Company |
Place name: | Golden Valley |
Date: | 1880 |
Description:
Image of newspaper cutting dated 2 October 1880 reporting on an extraordinary meeting of the shareholders of the Golden Valley Railway Company concerning contractors’ claims for payment for construction of the line. About £5,700 in cash and £11,000 in shares was claimed to settle costs over and above the original estimate, arising from delays in raising the necessary capital by the company. Litigation was to be avoided [but by implication was being threatened if the contractor’s demands were not met]. After lengthy discussion including deprecatory remarks about the management of the Company by Rev TP Powell and others, HH Wood and Sir George Cornewalle proposed that the directors should subscribe the amount required to finish the line, £ 21,209 being paid at once and £25,000 when the line was completed.
