Title: | Digital Archive: Newspaper cutting – Claim at the County Court for maintenance of wife and children |
Place name: | Longtown |
Date: | 1880 |
Description:
Image of newspaper cutting dated 14 May 1880 reporting on a case at the County Court brought by D Thomas, farmer of Longtown, father of the defendant’s wife, claiming ten shillings a week maintenance from J Gilbert, farmer of Bacton for his wife and two children on account of her having left the defendant owing to his cruelty. Evidence was presented of Mrs Gilbert having been beaten and dragged across fields by her hair, and of the wife and children sleeping in the fields to escape the violence. Counter claims were made by the defendant concerning his wife’s “familiarities” with a Mr Parry of Yellow House Farm, which had been the cause of many quarrels.
The case was adjourned for Mr Parry to be produced to give evidence.
