Title:

Photograph of a winnowing machine at Pontys Mill

Place name:

Longtown

Date:

1997

Description:

Photograph of a winnowing machine made by SA & H Kell of Gloucester and Ross on the stone floor at Pontys Mill. They were normally farm equipment rather than milling machinery and the fan, bottom right on the photo, was usually hand-cranked. It may have been used to clean the grain before grinding but would probably not have been worked indoors because dust and chaff is blown out of the front as the threshed grain passes through the riddles and makes a terrible mess without a wind to carry it away.

Observations:

None
