Description:

1. Will [3pages] dated 9 October 1840:
Beneficiaries: To William Davies of Lodge Farm, Raglan and Lewis Davis of Chapel Farm nr Chepstow, farmers, 'All that my freehold estate and premises called Trewern Caia Geel and Hendre….in the township of Longtown…And all those copyhold lands and premises called Teer Iarproe situate in the said township of Longtown and held by me under the Earl of Abergavenny for my own life and the life of my sister Hannah Thomas…. To hold the same ……upon the trust'
First, the trust to pay interest on a £700 mortgage secured to Mr Leigh on the estate.
Second to pay an annuity of £5 pa to brother, William and on William's death to David Meredith, son of sister, Elizabeth Meredith.
To Ann, wife, all residual rents and personal property exempt from responsibility for the mortgage payments but responsible for funeral and testamentary expenses. After her death the trust to arrange to continue the above annuity and also raise £120 to be shared between the six children, Margaret, David, Henry, Eleanor, Hannah and Thomas, of sister Elizabeth Meredith. The £120 to be raised via the rents and so the £20 legacies are to be paid in instalments to the children by seniority.

2. Inventory: none but cover sheet endorsed 'proved by Ann Pitt sole executrix £100'

 

Observations:

Includes letter from the Archdeaconry Office to the vicar of Clodock together with the form of oath to be administered to the executrix. Plus 2 separate cover sheets; 7 pages in all. With its trust this is quite a complex document, not helped by the legal verbosity.
