Description:

This photograph shows the heavy oak Hursting (frame) supporting the upright shaft (carrying the wallower, great spur wheel and crown wheel) and the bridging beams (which originally carried the stone shafts, stone nuts and runner stones). Tentering (adjustment of the gap between the millstones) is by means of screws turned by a handspike (centre left and centre right in the photograph), which raise or lower the entire bridging beam. The spouts directing the meal from the stones down to be collected in sacks or bins can also be seen (top left and top right in the photograph)
