Citing a marriage settlement dated
22 August 1782 by which Eleanor has the right to dispose of half the household goods, money and live and dead stock; and the reversion of a messuage in Michaelchurch Eskley called Pentwine.
Beneficiaries: To her brother, James Harris for his lifetime and then to nephew, William Harris '(eldest son of my said brother)', the reversion of the messuage called Pentwine subject to the life interest of her husband; also subject to payment of the following legacies:
To nephew James Harris brother of William, £50.
To niece, Ann, wife of Benjamin Morgan, 40/- per year paid in two equal half yearly payments for her sole use.
To the several brothers and sisters of William Harris [no names given], except brother James and sister Alice, £60 to be shared between them
To William Harris, son of nephew Walter Harris the younger, £10.
To Mary Harris, 'sister to the last named William Harris', £5.
To the two daughters [unnamed] 'of my sister Esther Gilbert, £10 each.
To goddaughter [unnamed], daughter of James Prosser of Michaelchurch Eskley, yeoman.
£40 is, on the death of Ann Morgan, to be distributed amongst her surviving children by Benjamin Morgan
As to the moiety of the household goods etc they are to pass to her husband for his lifetime and thence to Ann Morgan.

2. Inventory: none but coversheet is endorsed 'Effects sworn under Twenty Pounds'

 

 

Observations:

Documents include a bond with bounden, William Harris of Michaelchurch Eskley, farmer and James Spencer of Hay, Esquire in a surety of £40 appointing William Harris to administer his aunt's estate. There is a grant of administration in his name. In addition there is a letter from James Spencer of Hay dated 19 November 1812 addressed to Dr Church saying that he is sending him the will by the bearer, William Harris, the residual legatee as the testator's husband died last year.
