Description:
Photographs of the Parish Church of Saint John Baptist at Newton.
Newton, formerly known as Newton-in-Clodock, was originally one of the four townships of the old parish of Clodock, whose church was four miles away. About the year 1840, John Powell a yeoman living at New House, Newton, felt that Clodock church was too far away, and conceived the idea to get a church built specifically for Newton. Through his personal efforts and dedication he raised the money needed and built his church, pictured below. His story is told in a booklet by Reverend GJ Tuck which is available elsewhere on this website.
Newtonchurch is a stone building in Early English style, consisting of nave and small chancel, with a square tower at the western end, and seats eighty people. The churchyard contains half an acre and John Powell was laid to rest in the place of honour, close to the east wall of the church. His monument is inscribed:
Sacred to the memory of
John Powell, yeoman
late of the New House, Newton,
who founded this church.
He died August 31st 1864 aged 78 years.
