ST. MARGARET is a parish, 2 miles south from Vowchurch station on the Golden Valley section of the Great Western railway, 7 north-west from Pontrilas station on the Newport, Abergavenny and Hereford section of the same railway, 14 south-west from Hereford, in the Hereford division of the county, Ewyas Lacy hundred, Dore petty sessional division, Dore and Bredwardine rural district, Hereford county court district, rural deanery of Abbeydore, and archdeaconry and diocese of Hereford. The church of St. Margaret is an ancient building of stone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a small wooden tower at the west end, containing 3 bells: the chief feature of the church is a pre-Reformation rood loft and screen: there are 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1702. The united benefice of St. Margaret with Michaelchurch Eskley and Newton, is a vicarage, joint net yearly value £450, with residence, in the alternate gift of R. R. W. R. Trafford esq. and the vicar of Clodock, and held since 1935 by the Rev. Willie Ellam, of London College of Divinity, who resides at Newton. There is a Methodist chapel at Upper Mascoed, built in 1924, with sittings for 70 persons. R. R. W. R. Trafford esq. who is lord of the manor, and the trustees of the late Herbert Howorth Wood esq. M.A., D.L., J.P. are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy and clay; subsoil, chiefly clay and sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and swedes. The area is 2,609 acres ; the population in 1931 was 193.
